DATEV is the software developer and IT service provider for tax consultants, auditors, and attorneys as well as their clients, who are mainly small and medium-sized enterprises. In addition to its members, clients include companies, municipalities, and other institutions. The company’s range of products and services encompasses the fields of accounting, human resources, taxes, business consulting, consulting office management, IT services, and advanced training and consulting.

With 40,559 members, 7,005 employees (both counted at the end of the reporting period), and sales revenue of 928.3 million euros, DATEV, founded in 1966, is one of Europe’s preeminent information service providers and software developers. As such, the company ranks third on the list of business software providers in Germany (source: IDC). The company is headquartered in Nuremberg and operates an additional 25 offices throughout Germany as well as an information center in Nuremberg, information offices in Berlin and Brussels, and associated companies in Germany, Italy, Austria, Poland, and the Czech Republic. Associated companies in Germany include the joint ventures TeleTax GmbH as well as TeleLex GmbH, which primarily offer multimedia training services for tax consultants and attorneys respectively.

Privacy and Information Security

As a result of digital change, cloud solutions will continue to become more important. Highly-sensitive data from approximately 2.5 million companies and 12 million employees is already saved at the DATEV data center today.

As a professional IT service provider and supplier of cloud solutions, privacy and data security are DATEV’s highest priorities. The information security management system (ISMS), recertified pursuant to the international ISO 27001 standard by the Association for the Certification of Management Systems (DQS GmbH), which is used at the data center and printing, logistics, and service center, attests to the importance the cooperative places on privacy and security. In addition, the validity of the cooperative’s existing data security certification pursuant to Sec. 9a of Germany’s Federal Data Protection Act (BDSG) was fully confirmed within the scope of the annual audit carried out by DQS.

Digital Transformation and DATEV 2025

The tax consulting profession is changing. In addition to legal and political factors, it is highly impacted by technological advancements that are taking place under the mantle of the “digital transformation” as a result of increasing digitization, automation, and the interconnection of processes. The E-Government Act passed by Germany’s federal government has created the foundation for the implementation of the government’s “Digital Government 2020” program. As a result of IT life cycles that are constantly growing shorter as well as changing legal requirements, new information technologies for efficient consultancy structures are becoming increasingly important.

As a cooperative IT service provider, DATEV is focused on the long-term advancement of its members in the profession. In the “DATEV 2025” strategy process adopted in fiscal year 2016, the cooperative has set the goal of guiding and supporting its members and their clients through this transformation process with a range of products and services that has been specifically expanded to include solutions focused on the cloud and data.

In this context, DATEV’s core business forms the foundation for this strategic repositioning. In addition to this evolution toward cloud-based products, DATEV will maintain its existing solutions. As such, during the 2016 fiscal year, systematic functional and technical advancements were made to existing DATEV applications within the scope of the annual release plans, and new legal requirements were also implemented.

Within the scope of the progressive digitization of processes between tax consultants, companies, and government agencies, seamless workflows that do not require switching between data formats will be a key component of the digital future. In this context, DATEV provides the technical platform for the exchange of data between companies, institutions, and government agencies. For example, around 1.6 million annual reports were submitted to the fiscal authorities in electronic form via the DATEV data center during the current fiscal year.

With its browser-based application DATEV Enterprise Online, DATEV also offers a secure cloud solution that, as a platform for exchanging receipts and invoices, data, and documents, simplifies collaboration between companies and their tax consultant. Approximately 80,000 companies currently use the DATEV Enterprise Online solution, which allows key business processes to be reproduced in the cloud.

The new, cross-system DATEVconnect online interface plays a further role in the digitization and synchronization of business processes between the profession and companies, including for companies that are not currently using any DATEV solutions themselves. This interface allows cloud-based ERP solutions from other providers to connect with the DATEV system.

The DATEV data center, which is the physical location of the DATEV Cloud, stands at the center of the processes that divide duties between DATEV, its members, and their clients. As both a platform and a data hub, it allows DATEV to provide new services – like DATEV Smart Transfer, DATEV Smart Login, and DATEV Upload Mobile – which further simplify processes, improve data transfer, and offer increased convenience to both tax consultants and their clients.

In addition, users can access appropriate cloud solutions for accounting, human resource management, tax declaration, and consultancy security. The demand for secure cloud solutions for business and tax-related processes once again increased significantly in fiscal year 2016.


With 40,559 members at the end of the reporting period (2015: 40,501), the cooperative once again succeeded in increasing the number of members compared to the previous year.

Membership Trends (2012-2016)


In light of its cooperative mission to support its members, the right balance between economic, environmental, and social concerns within the three-pillar model of sustainability is of critical importance to DATEV. The sustainability guidelines in effect since 2001 form the basis of this.

In addition to successful long-term business performance, the cooperative strives to create values for its members, clients, and employees, and at the same time assumes social responsibility. DATEV’s activities as a cooperative are reflected in “member value” as the total value of operations for its members. Instead of short-term capital interests, they benefit from the long-term potential support offered by the cooperative company.

DATEV’s environmental management system is oriented on the ISO 14001 standard. In addition, DATEV has for many years utilized an environmental management system that continues to push ahead with an ongoing improvement process above and beyond the provisions of environmental law. In this context, one focus is on green IT measures to further optimize the energy efficiency of the data center.

Because of our efforts to ensure sustainability in corporate management, we received the 2016 Green Controlling Award from the Péter Horváth Foundation in cooperation with the International Controller Association (ICV).

Employee development (2012-2016)

Human Resources

On December 31, 2016, DATEV had a total of 7,005 employees (2015: 6,839). This corresponds to a net gain of 166 staff members.

At the end of the reporting period, the percentage of employees in a part-time position remained stable year over year, standing at 23%. While the total share of female employees remained largely unchanged at 41%, the percentage of female members of management increased further, standing at approximately 29% (2015: 28%). The number of vocational trainees in all fields and age groups increased slightly from the previous year, standing at 153.

The company’s long-term strategy to increase its attractiveness as an employer against the background of demographic and social changes once again proved successful in 2016, and this was particularly confirmed by the positive results of the “2016 Great Place to Work” comparison of companies. In this competition, DATEV was once again listed among the best employers in both the industry-wide and cross-industry rankings.

With over 43,000 advanced training days in 2016, advanced training activities increased and significantly exceeded the average of recent years. Among other reasons, this was particularly due to changing business requirements.


With the exception of Poland, the sales companies in Italy, Austria, and the Czech Republic achieved their planned objectives in the 2016 fiscal year. DATEV KOINOS S.r.l. (Italy) once again succeeded in significantly increasing revenues year over year. In particular, the state-of-the-art solutions DATEV Suite (Italy) and DATEV pro (Austria) continue to be cornerstones of the business and, as such, the basis for further growth.
